When you submit products for review, it’s best to use a smartphone or well made SHORT Demo Video of a Prototype that looks market ready.

First, you have to have a well made prototype.

The better the prototype, the easier it is to license. However prototypes can be expensive so hedge your bet by starting with the least expensive, best looking version of your idea that you can do.

See Types of Prototypes for more detail.

It can be a low cost, but well done $5 Prototype, a hand made craft or a professionally done or 3D printer prototype. Finished products are easiest to license or sell but higher risk and more expensive to the inventor.

Second, make a demo video.

This can be professionally done, shot by an amateur or homemade with a smart phone or video recorder. The key is to use the right language and shoe the product Problems / Solution / Benefits in under 2 minutes, but no more than 5 minutes. If you have questions, read my blog, Demo Videos That Sell.

Third, post your video online.

I recommend setting up your own YouTube or Vimeo channel because it offers you a free platform with the most control over your video content. You can see a view count, telling you when your video is being viewed so you can keep an eye on the progress. Generally, we need 1-3 views to start, 4-7 views if we’re interested and under 10 views to offer a licensing agreement. The content remains under your control so you can delete the video at any time.

To maintain confidentiality:

Vimeo: Please be sure to set your privacy settings to “only people with a password.” Don’t forget to include your password in your submission email. Also, please select “download the video” option.

YouTube: Please adjust your settings so the video is “unlisted”, then share the link with us via the submission form.

Finally, submit your product to Carrie Jeske

Always give us First Look before sending anywhere else.

Submit Online. A member of our team will review your submission and reply with the next steps.

IMPORTANT: when you submit via email, be sure to include:

Subject Line of Email: Simply list the Product Name. This allows me to sort, track and forward to interested investors.

Link To Video in the Body of Email: Copy/paste a link to a video from your YouTube, Vimeo, or website in the body of the email.

My email date and time stamps every email for my protection and yours. All submissions are confidential, non-public disclosures. I will reply to every single product submission with specific feedback related to the Characteristics of Successful TV Products.

Prototype types are very important to know because when you invent well, it’s in sequence.

In the early stages, inventors need to save money and prove the invention concept in the fastest amount of time with the least amount of cost. Understanding the 8 kinds of prototypes and knowing when to use them can save a lot of time and money. Here is my recommendation.

Use through the VALIDATION / EVALUATION Phase

1) Proof of Concept Prototype

Use existing materials, parts and components to prove the new idea works or not and make reasonable assumptions about how much the invention will cost to make, based on similar materials being sold in other products. This step DOES NOT have to be in tangible form. You can easily look around in stores and compare the cost of similar materials, used in other products. You can make assumptions based on the retail price points and gain insight on which materials might work best for your concept.

2) Inventor Mock Up Prototype

(Low cost start for As Seen on TV Submissions). Click here for info on How To Submit Product Concepts.

A rough construction using crude materials such as cardboard, foam, paper or wood typically done to show the idea in 3D form. You can jiffy rig pieces and parts together to demonstrate the product so you can show it to potential partners. The main goal here is to be able to explain the features and benefits to trusted people who can offer you feedback. You can make a home made video demo showing your product in action and

3) Virtual Prototypes or Animations Prototype

(Perfect for developing Sell Sheets before spending money on inventory)

3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) rendering. These can be fancy and detailed done in a CAD program for greater detail or simple and arty, making the product look aesthetically pleasing on a graphic sell sheet. Using a graphically created photo is a great way to test the concept, validate the market need and gain support from team members, investors and license partners is fantastic. It’s so important to determine the features and benefits of the product.

I’m not a fan of animations as a form of submitting product ideas for licensing, unless the product is complex. For simple items like what we look for in As Seen On TV, the mock-up is best for evaluation, but the working prototype or 3D Printed prototype is better for testing.

CAD drawings or line drawings are great for patent filing, but not very compelling to marketers and product licensee’s.

The farther an inventor brings the product, the easier it is to gain interest.

Use through the BUSINESS PLANNING Phase & Testing Phase. BEST for ASOTV.

4) Model or 3D Printed Prototype

A form built and painted for aesthetic appearance only

5) Working Prototype

A fully functioning item yet may not be fully designed & engineered for manufacturability, nor it may not be appearance like.

6) Black Box Prototype

An existing enclosure or box with mechanical, electrical, optical and or software internals fully functioning.

Use through the PROTOTYPES & PATENTS Phase

7) Rapid Prototype

A group of techniques used to quickly fabricate a scale model of a part or assembly using three dimensional CAD data.

Use through MANUFACTURING phase

8) Pre-Production Prototype

A prototype provided by the manufacturer prior to full production. Done to insure quality, concept, and functionality.

Make Product Demo Videos by Carrie Jeske

You don’t have to use a professional videographer to make good demo videos that can secure a licensing agreement. It’s possible to shoot the demo video yourself using a smart phone or video recorder. There are many free video editing apps and software available and you can post them on a free YouTube account in an “unlisted” setting. As an inventor, it’s important that you become or partner with a video resource that can make demo videos that sell. Of course, you want to make the best video possible with the least amount of expense.

As Seen On TV Logo.

Whatever you do, DO NOT include the As Seen on TV red/white logo on your product packaging or video. Many inventors think adding this well-known icon helps communicate TV viability. In reality, it suggests the product has already been tested by another TV distribution company and since is not widely seen in the market, it must have failed the early stage viability testing. Failing a market viability test makes the product toxic within the As Seen On TV industry. Who wants to fund a product that’s already failed? That’s like throwing good money after bad. However, many products that fail to gain mass market ASOTV exposure can go on to earn profits or royalties in more niche sectors, business to business channels or traditional manufactures. Contact my agents at www.InventiveIdeas.com for help licensing non ASOTV products. To submit directly for As Seen On TV consideration, checkout www.Willitlaunch.com.

Also, give me First Look before showing the item around town or put it on the public domain. Speed to market and confidentiality are important in our business so if everyone is reviewing the product idea at the same time, it loses uniqueness, which is an important characteristic of success. In these highly competitive times, finding a partner you trust is important for all parties concerned. No one wants to be double dated.

Target Investors or Consumers?

For TV products, we need to convince a group of investors that this item is worth funding. It must meet the Characteristics of Successful TV Products and be well made enough to capture their interest. Don’t include any fluff. We review 20-100 products per day/week so we “get it” fast. Steer clear of the inventor headshot with blah, blah, blah, blah. Just show us the product, explain the problem it solves and demonstrate your product solving it with benefits.

You may consider targeting the end user consumer. This often is a better way of explaining the problem and solution. Plus, it helps in the testing process since many of the inventor assets can be used.

First: What Is It?

Show you value time by telling WHAT the product is from the start. I’ve seen videos that burn 15-30 seconds on a corny introduction and take over a minute before we even know what we’re supposed to be reviewing. Show us the item right from the start quickly, then move directly into the PROBLEMS of living without it is what sells.

Ready, Set, Action.

Include action and demonstration in every aspect. TV is visually demonstrable form of media. What sells is seeing the problem in action. What is the pain of living without this product? Connect to the emotional struggle that brings. Seeing the product in use solving the problem and bringing joy, comfort and ease of use to the situation is what sells. Showing and demonstrating use after use increases the value perception of the item showing investors its worth funding and buyers it’s worth owning. Products that solve everyday problems in demonstrable ways are the most successful.

Is There A Real Problem?

It may be a real mass market problem? Is it a mass market problem that really needs to be solved? More important, is is a problem that consumers on a mass market scale will pay to solve? Why? Your ability to visually demonstrate the pain associated in living without your new invention is key because it can motivate the purchase. Pain creates the impulse to buy, but it has to be positioned in a positive, helpful way that makes everyday life on planet earth more joyful. No negative, safety, preventative, fear-based or downer language. Just help the viewer connect with their struggles in a way that sparks a desire for change… something better.

Benefits / Value. Benefits / Value.

Once you position the problem in a realistic way, move into showing the benefits and value of the item. Create believability by showing the product doing what you say it will do. Connect viewers emotionally to the value of the solution. Value can come in many forms. Ease of use, many uses, and positive impact of the solution are just a few. Think it through. Try using before/after shots or with and without examples. Write out a script or just shoot the video on the fly and post and submit.

In The End.

If you have info about competitive products, costs, industry trends or other info that will help us make a decision to fund the product, please put it at the end, unless you built it into the problem.

What’s In A Name?

Not that big of an issue because we usually change it but if you want to brainstorm, make sure the name reflects the use. It’s better if it’s descriptive of the solution or clever. Many TV products seem to have two word names starting with the same letter. Consider Magic Mesh,Windshield Wonder, Jupiter Jack.

Then, there are single word names that do well with a super power quality such as Groutinator.

How Long Should The Demo Videos Be?

Under 2 minutes would be great, but no more than 3 minutes, at most. A good rule of thumb is:

15 seconds to show the product.

Then 15 seconds to 1 minute to explain the problem.

15 seconds to 1 minute to explain the benefits/value.

In Closing.

Make the problem look BIG and the Solution look “WOW”. Simple right? The more videos you make the better you’ll get at making content strong and compelling. It doesn’t have to cost cash, but there is a time investment to learning. Keep at it. Just takes 1 winner to make millions.

Inventing Home Run or Single Income Product?

As Seen On TV Invention Process

1) Make a working prototype.
2) Make a short demo video and post “unlisted” on YouTube.
3) Submit the link to me, as a “First Look” sneak peak. I’ll give you feedback.
4) We’ll do a proprietary market test with real consumers the final judge.
5) We’ll produce a 2 minute TV commercial test. Then do nationwide full media campaign.
6) We’ll manufacture and roll it into Walmart, CVS, Walgreens and ASOTV shelf space everywhere.
7) You’ll be paid royalties or finders fees. Mailbox money!

Mass Market or Niche Product?

ASOTV is a home run play. The fastest, least expensive way to hit it big in products. It’s the best, first choice. A small royalty can equal millions paid to the inventor.

If at any stage, your product fails, you’ll have options. As Seen On TV is simply the first and best distribution channel for physically small, low cost items that solve an everyday problem.

If mass market consumers don’t resonate with the product or the problem/solution, it’s time to move to niche markets. Niche markets generally won’t sell as many units per year or make as much in royalties as a mass market item; but sometimes they do. Plus, $20,000 to $150,000 a year in royalties is still a pretty good part time inventing job to have. For more help, see Inventive Ideas.

The goal of every product idea, is to find where products are purchased, in the highest volumes, and by whom? Then, license the concept to a manufacture/distributor in that area. Simple, right?

Marketing has the same challenges for companies and inventors. Find your niche before running out of cash! That’s why it’s so nice when the ball goes out of the park with the first ASOTV shot. If it doesn’t, you’re not done batting and the game isn’t over. Keep inventing.

You Bet Your Instincts

It’s my belief that the inventors instincts are critical. Find a place of peace, once you have all the data, then reflect on it soberly. You’re hearing the good and bad responses to your product and seeing the sales, which are the ultimate guide. Everyone likes a product till you ask them to buy it. Sales are the true reflection of interest. Keep in mind, you’re looking for the target market of people who “buy” it, not who just “like” it.

The next consideration is cash. Every bet you place depletes capital and everything costs either money, time or both. You have to hear the feedback you’re getting from consumers and make go/no go decisions along the way. Not every product idea will make it. In fact, most fail to produce a financial return. Knowing when to push forward and when to let go is a tough decision.

That’s one reason I like the ASOTV testing process. It’s void of emotion and measures consumer responsiveness to a specific product pitch at a specific time in history. Results may vary with product variations and timing, but at lease we learn fast what will and will not fly today.

There’s no way of knowing if product redesigns, features pitched or creative will change the outcome. No way to predict which path is lucrative and which are not. I’ve seen every manner of success and failure with seemingly right and wrong choices. No one can predict what consumers will buy or not buy. Product success is a perfect storm of the 7 P’s: Product, Price, Promotion, Placement, Packaging, Position, People.

You can work with WIL in several ways: Full Licensing Agreement, Partnership.

Distribution Plans, or Consulting. To find out which is best for you, just contact ask. Let’s swing for the fences together!

Hope this helps. I’m a long term relationship person who values loyalty, trust and hard work. If that’s you, let’s connect.

Complaints, Reviews, Common Sense with Carrie Jeske

I’m amazed at how many people believe complaints, reviews or complements they read online. It’s marketing, you know?

Remember when people used to think what they read in newspapers and magazines and saw on TV shows was real? Then we discovered the whole industry of Public Relations (PR) and realized for $5,000 a month a good PR company can have anyone on Good Morning America, as an expert. I won’t pay that kind of extortion just to look like everyone likes me. The truth is, not everyone does…. but MOST PEOPLE DO.

Coaches promote signed licensing agreements for product that were simply tested but failed; never making the inventor a dime. Inventors should not believe everything written online for the good or the bad. Use your common sense and intuition about people and soberly discern the right next steps for your product.

Most people who write bad reviews are just mad their product failed our test. Please call or write me yourself before you decide your opinion.

Here’s how REAL PEOPLE review Carrie Jeske. click Carrie Jeske Profile

Related: Inventing Home Run or Single Income Product

It’s the same thing with online reviews now. I recently read a list of very positive reviews for a company every industry insider knows is a scammer. They sounded wonderful. Five Stars. People loved them! There were glowing reviews starting with the initial call by an inventor and what great phone service was provided. Then another reviewer discussed the contracts and how simple to understand they were. I read on to find what fantastic customer service and order fulfillment processes this company had. Then, more about how satisfied and happy with the specific services (written keyword friendly, how convenient.), even sighting employee names, as if they were long lost friends, who’d been reunited.

Seriously? Do people really believe this? It’s a Social Networking Expert, you know. For $5,000 a month (or $5 on Fiverr), you can hire a company to write positive reviews and post them all over the internet. It’s just business. Specifically… it’s todays marketing. Lets go negative.

The Wild Wild West of Online Complaints & Reviews

Anyone can say anything, anytime. Do you think some people might actually be crazy, unbalance, manic? As a semi public figure who’s just posted a few educational videos online for inventors, in a pretty small market segment; I get hassled online all the time. People make all kinds of comments, tweets, reviews based on whatever popped into their head at the moment. True, untrue, fact, fiction, opinion, emotional response, bad hair day…. who knows why? I’ve been threatened by people I’ve never met or worked with in any capacity.

The sad thing is it hurts people and it hurts business. Back in the day, the Better Business Bureau used to be the gold standard of who’s who in the scammer company zoo. Business didn’t like them much because no one wants negative information shared, but at least they required a specific injustice be sited. They required a confirmed real person making a real complaint of a legitimate contractual infraction. Also offer a real opportunity to rebut or make restitution. They provided a true chance for customer satisfaction where parties could agree on how to make a situation right. It was an uncomfortable pain in the butt (as fixing all true

Be Careful!

We have every manner of Rip Off Report, Pissed Customer, Consumer Advocate, Watch Dog, Social Network where anyone can post anything at anytime. What a great platform for disreputable competitors and the temporarily insane.

These sites will post anything, any time, by anyone. Real, anonymous or made up people with real or made up facts. That seems disreputable to me.

They promote slander under the disguise of public helps. Under the banner of justice. Once names of the accused are locked in, “never to be removed from the public domain”, the real scam begins. Many start an email campaign warning the accused that their company name or personal name may on the verge of “irreparable damage if you don’t act now!” For a small fee, they guarantee to bury or remove all negative information for a price. Hmmm, how convenient for them. The ole’ scammers scam. I hope all the class action law suits against these sites sort out the honest truth.

Are Some Inventors Temporarily Insane?

Lets discuss the “temporarily insane”. That’s something I and most inventors have fallen victim to at one time or another. We love, love, love our own ideas and when we put money into them, the emotional connection borders on worship. (You know it’s true.) When others don’t value it or recognize it’s splendor, that makes no logical sense. Snap. Temporary insanity begins. It happens all the time and now there’s an internet where people can post…. WHAT? Anything, anytime, as anyone. Bottom line…. my grandma used to tell me to have Horse Sense? I’m not sure really how much sense that actually is, but if a company wants money to provide a service for your great new product and has no current product success stories, you might want to reconsider. It may be as simple as that.

Whatever you do you can count on me to tell you the truth, as my experience sees it. I’ll be candid and direct. You won’t always like my advice.

The Truth Hurts!

When you spend money on an invention, it’s a high risk, high return play. Most inventions fail. Most patents don’t produce a financial gain. Never spend more then you can afford to lose and realize sometimes it does take money, to make money. Show some Horse Sense about it. Whether you’re an independent inventor or a big company, the game is the same. Find and/or develop a product mass market consumers buy and get a small piece of the upside.

If you’re a fair minded, reasonable inventor, call or write me anytime. I value long term, honest relationships with real people. I hope we get lucky on a product together. If not, I guess I’ll skim past your posts online (whoever you are) and not let the door hit me in the back.

Onward & Upward,

Product Competition

In today’s world, there is so much competition for the consumer dollar. People have many choices about where and how to spend their money. Getting them to put it on an inventor product takes marketing skill and a fair bit of luck or Divine Providence.

Product licensing isn’t easy work. It takes time and is filled with redundant tasks and rejection. It’s not for everyone, but over the years, I’ve learned a lot from both sides of the table. I experienced the wide eyed optimism of being and inventor, the sober minded hope of running a small business, the disappointment of failure and the surge of responsibility bought by success.

My goal is to make a difference and add value as inventors consider the pros and cons of each next step in the inventing sequence. Here’s a page with helpful information.

Nowadays inventors have many options for whom to choose as a partner. You can Do It Yourself (DIY) or hire a professional. Either way, securing a licensing agreement is a combination of hard work and luck.

Product Licensing

Licensing is a fun business. Over 20 years, I’ve had the unique perspective of watching licensing agreements from both sides of the table. This last few years, more of my time has been spend on the phone with inventors. There is so much room for growth and opportunity now for everyone.

I enjoy long term relationships built on trust and mutual profit. Please give me first look at your product ideas and let me help if I can. I enjoy making money in teams. No one person can take a product from concept to market on their own. We need one another. I love being on this side of the table where I see so many products and have a much clearer understanding of just how hard it is to succeed at making money on a product idea. The launch costs are excessive. Far higher then most inventors realize. Certainly more time consuming then I imaged, as an inventor.

I look forward to getting to know you on social networks. It’s very helpful when you participate and ask questions on the public domain for the good of all.

ASOTV Licensing

Today (about 3 years ago) was an interesting day in ASOTV licensing. Those of you who know me realize my heart is the educate and inspire inventors to create great new products that can be licensed into the As Seen on TV distribution channel. that goes into mass market retail.

I’ve been at this for about 15 years total and three years ASOTV with serious focus growing this year because I believe it’s the fastest. least expensive way an inventor can make money on a product. even at concept stage. I enjoy the freedom of not having to charge service fees. which gives me peace of mind since I don’t have to charge anyone any money. Most products fail and about 90% of patents issues by the USPTO never see a store shelf so the invention business is not normally a quick or easy path to riches, but it is a path nonetheless.

I have quite a bit of experience in business, in general, and launching my inventor husband’s ideas but sitting on this side of the table is an eye opening and really fun experience. I share the conversations below as a training tool for innovators.

A Tale of Three ASOTV Licensing Discussions

They start bad but end really well.

Let’s call the product, PickThick for training purposes…. This is a “Not So Great” Example for the MANUFACTURE and SELL invention strategy.

We had an initial conversation where a Term Sheet was sent to the Inventor of PickThick. A product already on the market selling in limited distribution.

This is an example of someone who wants to manufacture and sell their product and build a business around it. They’ve experienced some sales success toward that goal.

I know this route well because it was my strategy for our SportsShade Canopy Awning product. You can make more money in the long run, but the path is normally much more costly and difficult than you expect. Having a strong background in business. strong capital reserves and a lot of persistence and tenacity. Access to a pre-established distribution channel and sales teams is a must. Funding product liability insurance, managing increasing manufacturing costs and expenses. protecting profit when faced with aggressive buyers who are trained to gain discount. managing massive vendor shipping requirements and navigating accounting issues are the norm. Not to forget merchandising. It’s one thing to get a product into the store and it’s quite another to merchandise it in a way that makes people buy it. Single product vendors have a difficult time getting inside retail and doing well, once they do.

Pick Thick

Enter… a conversation with the inventor of PickThick. A product seeing some early sales success in limited distribution. We like the item for TV and it makes it through three subjective committee reviews and a due diligence market analysis. We’re ready to contact the inventor and offer a term sheet and licensing agreement with a guaranteed minimum first year royalty of $250,000. If the product tests well, he makes millions in under a year. If it fails, then released from the licensing agreement in under 3 months.

He was a very arrogant and rude man with a giant chip on his shoulder. He said we’re all talking down to him because he’s this very accomplished businessman, which maybe he is???? But…. he’s spouting his relationship with Kevin Herrington from Shark Tank. (Which is the first clue he has no understanding of our industry because everyone inside knows Kevin is mostly selling services now.)

In any case, he seemed peeved that we are all trying so hard to get him on board and gave me a quick, “Don’t call me, I’ll call you. I’m a very busy man.” brushoff… so…. he has our number and I’m not holding my breath. As of July 17, 2016, I checked back with him. He’s selling a whopping $30,000 in revenue a year and missed his window. There are lots of similar products on the market now. It hurts me more then it hurts him I think, because I know how much money we both lost, by the delay.

Furnace Friend

Started off rough but ended really well. It began with him playing coy about his meetings with all the big name buyer (which is almost always a lot more hope, than actual sales opportunity.) Then he went into the “if it makes sense, I’ll entertain it” mantra. Even so, I pressed in and connected with him because I sensed he was a nice man who deep inside knows he needs an opportunity break.

Once the walls came down and I sensed we were having real conversation rather than guarded salesmanship, it really went well. I called from the Will It Launch office and hunted Ed down, then had a three way call, where Ed was stellar and Paul was honest. It ended with Ed agreeing to send the term sheet for Paul to review. Seems like the product, inventor and investor may be a great match. I liked the whole thing and believe the product has a real chance.

write to me at carrie@inventiveideas.com and let’s see if the next winner can come from you!

See you on the shelves!

Question?

How does the Intellectual Property remain mine from the time I submitted to the time that it is made public and needs IP protection?

Short Answer?

Use non-disclosure agreements (NDA’s), term sheets and modification/improvements clauses in contracts. Pick your partners wisely.

On My Soapbox…

We count the product owner to be the inventor. Since we don’t require patents, we just use the product name, which is generally descriptive. Also, our company has a good track record. We work to be “inventor friendly”. I’ve headed up inventor groups that grew to 1,500 and post videos and free educational material to put people at ease because we want good ideas. Here’s a playlist of good I.P. insights.

I’ve launched my own products successfully, but it’s hard work and not as profitable as people perceive because of the high cost of doing business. When I joined forces with the people at WIL, it was because of their integrity and ability. I knew we needed to be transparent to gain inventors trust and that’s my role.

Our appetite for products is so great and the upside so high, that we need inventors thinking and creating product concepts. Most products fail. Consumers simply won’t buy them in large enough scale to be worth the effort. When we develop out a winner, it’s actually more fun to share the wealth, as a team; enjoying the journey together.

That said, I’m constantly educating inventors on royalty rate verses financial risk on the company side to develop an item out, and the importance of being nice and reasonable. Inventors often over estimate the value of their initial concept and some can be “difficult to work with” because of that over estimation, greed, pride or misguided skill arrogance. We’ve realized our time is the most valuable resource we have since it’s cannot be recouped no matter how much money we make. Time is a limited resource. Being able to choose whom we work with is a pleasant benefit.

The Truth Is!

I enjoy long term relationships of trust. The hard truth…. If any company wants to design around a product, they can. When inventors post products on crowd funding sites or DIY networks, they actually end up exposing market problems and solutions that companies take notice of, then invent better, totally unique, product solutions on their own.

Bottom line…. It comes down to contract clauses and language that protect you from invention modifications, but more then that, it comes down to people and trust. Court battles rarely end in the inventors favor. Choose your partners wisely and if a big bad company comes knocking…. Have someone like WIL on your side, take their deal and say “thank you”; or prepare to compete with them in the open market.

As for me, I give information for free and make money only when products sell. In return, I hope for “First Look” and 120 days to develop out a product before pray & spraying it to every Tom, Dick and Harry.

See you on the shelves,
