Demo Video Pitch Tips

Getting the demo video right is more important than ever. Every inventor needs to be skilled at VIDEO EDITING and PROTOTYPE MAKING.

In “As Seen On TV” category of DRTV, we often use the inventors original video for the initial survey phase of testing. With smartphone technology and video editing so accessible, learning to make a demo video is a basic skill every inventor needs to have.

“A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words but a Demo Video Is Worth a Million Dollars.”

Carrie Jeske

I’ve included a script writing template at the end of this blog.

Making The Demo Video

Decide Audience based on Prototype Quality? Are you pitching to our team or our you pitching to potential customers? If you prototype looks good, pitch as you would to real customers. If not, you’ll need to pitch to our group and focus heavily on the problem you’re solving

Keep It Short. 60 seconds or less is idea for our survey test phase. Visual Demo works best. If you go to 2-min scripts are no more than 300 words with Product Problem/Solution repeating so use most compelling language

What’s Your Problem? ASOTV products have a clearly understood PROBLEM / SOLUTION pitch. Often problems are shown in B/W for dramatic effect. While that level of production is not necessary for the initial demo video, showing and telling the PROBLEM/SOLUTION is.

The Product is the Star – Show close ups of the product more than your own self so we can see what we’re buying. Show or explain examples of the Features of your product providing Benefits to the consumer. Add a Wow Factor.

Editing & Voice Over. If you can shoot the visual then do a voice over of the whole video, that tends to get more responses from consumers. If not and you need to pitch in a one take smartphone format, then speak clearly and show close ups of the actual product more than your own self.

“WOW” Factor. Outrageous Demos & Amazing Visuals, Unique Materials. Flashlights strong enough to be ran over by a Mac truck. Tape that can reseal boat bottom cutouts. Magic materials that have amazing & unique benefits. These are the secrets of As Seen On TV. Get creative with it, when appropriate.

Product Names. The product name will be tested at the end of the process but creativity up front is important. Names that Explain Function are best. Two Consonant names tend to roll better such a Magic Mesh, Windshield Wonder, Jupiter Jack.

Hosting or Posting the Demo Video

Do not send a large video file to licensee’s. Companies don’t want their email systems bogged down by large files. Instead, host the video on the cloud. There are many options from Dropbox, Google Drive to YouTube Unlisted. Learn to upload your demo video then COPY the link and PASTE it into your email.

Submitting Your Demo Video

Always put the PRODUCT NAME in the Subject line so feedback can be easily tracked or searched.

Include a simple link to the demo video or attach a pdf sell sheet along with a SHORT note.

EXAMPLE EMAIL: Dear George, please take a quick look at this new “patented” product and let me know if you company is interested in discussing licensing or acquisition.

ADD LINK to “Unlisted” YouTube Video

Any feedback you have regarding your interest or experience with these kinds of products is appreciated.

I look forward to your response.

DO NOT SEND DUPLICATE EMAILS & WEBSITE SUBMISSIONS.

DO NOT SEND MANY EMAILS ABOUT THE SAME PRODUCT.

DO ALSO SUBMIT ONLINE IF THEY OFFER THE OPTION.

Waiting For A Response

See another blog about this topic. It’s important!

Pitch Demo Video Script Template

Production Notes:

Time Voice Over Audio Portion so the entire spot is no more than 2 minutes and preferably 1 minute with a 30 second action demo edit scene available for social networking interest.

Make Product Demo Videos by Carrie Jeske

You don’t have to use a professional videographer to make good demo videos that can secure a licensing agreement. It’s possible to shoot the demo video yourself using a smart phone or video recorder. There are many free video editing apps and software available and you can post them on a free YouTube account in an “unlisted” setting. As an inventor, it’s important that you become or partner with a video resource that can make demo videos that sell. Of course, you want to make the best video possible with the least amount of expense.

As Seen On TV Logo.

Whatever you do, DO NOT include the As Seen on TV red/white logo on your product packaging or video. Many inventors think adding this well-known icon helps communicate TV viability. In reality, it suggests the product has already been tested by another TV distribution company and since is not widely seen in the market, it must have failed the early stage viability testing. Failing a market viability test makes the product toxic within the As Seen On TV industry. Who wants to fund a product that’s already failed? That’s like throwing good money after bad. However, many products that fail to gain mass market ASOTV exposure can go on to earn profits or royalties in more niche sectors, business to business channels or traditional manufactures. Contact my agents at www.InventiveIdeas.com for help licensing non ASOTV products. To submit directly for As Seen On TV consideration, checkout www.Willitlaunch.com.

Also, give me First Look before showing the item around town or put it on the public domain. Speed to market and confidentiality are important in our business so if everyone is reviewing the product idea at the same time, it loses uniqueness, which is an important characteristic of success. In these highly competitive times, finding a partner you trust is important for all parties concerned. No one wants to be double dated.

Target Investors or Consumers?

For TV products, we need to convince a group of investors that this item is worth funding. It must meet the Characteristics of Successful TV Products and be well made enough to capture their interest. Don’t include any fluff. We review 20-100 products per day/week so we “get it” fast. Steer clear of the inventor headshot with blah, blah, blah, blah. Just show us the product, explain the problem it solves and demonstrate your product solving it with benefits.

You may consider targeting the end user consumer. This often is a better way of explaining the problem and solution. Plus, it helps in the testing process since many of the inventor assets can be used.

First: What Is It?

Show you value time by telling WHAT the product is from the start. I’ve seen videos that burn 15-30 seconds on a corny introduction and take over a minute before we even know what we’re supposed to be reviewing. Show us the item right from the start quickly, then move directly into the PROBLEMS of living without it is what sells.

Ready, Set, Action.

Include action and demonstration in every aspect. TV is visually demonstrable form of media. What sells is seeing the problem in action. What is the pain of living without this product? Connect to the emotional struggle that brings. Seeing the product in use solving the problem and bringing joy, comfort and ease of use to the situation is what sells. Showing and demonstrating use after use increases the value perception of the item showing investors its worth funding and buyers it’s worth owning. Products that solve everyday problems in demonstrable ways are the most successful.

Is There A Real Problem?

It may be a real mass market problem? Is it a mass market problem that really needs to be solved? More important, is is a problem that consumers on a mass market scale will pay to solve? Why? Your ability to visually demonstrate the pain associated in living without your new invention is key because it can motivate the purchase. Pain creates the impulse to buy, but it has to be positioned in a positive, helpful way that makes everyday life on planet earth more joyful. No negative, safety, preventative, fear-based or downer language. Just help the viewer connect with their struggles in a way that sparks a desire for change… something better.

Benefits / Value. Benefits / Value.

Once you position the problem in a realistic way, move into showing the benefits and value of the item. Create believability by showing the product doing what you say it will do. Connect viewers emotionally to the value of the solution. Value can come in many forms. Ease of use, many uses, and positive impact of the solution are just a few. Think it through. Try using before/after shots or with and without examples. Write out a script or just shoot the video on the fly and post and submit.

In The End.

If you have info about competitive products, costs, industry trends or other info that will help us make a decision to fund the product, please put it at the end, unless you built it into the problem.

What’s In A Name?

Not that big of an issue because we usually change it but if you want to brainstorm, make sure the name reflects the use. It’s better if it’s descriptive of the solution or clever. Many TV products seem to have two word names starting with the same letter. Consider Magic Mesh,Windshield Wonder, Jupiter Jack.

Then, there are single word names that do well with a super power quality such as Groutinator.

How Long Should The Demo Videos Be?

Under 2 minutes would be great, but no more than 3 minutes, at most. A good rule of thumb is:

15 seconds to show the product.

Then 15 seconds to 1 minute to explain the problem.

15 seconds to 1 minute to explain the benefits/value.

In Closing.

Make the problem look BIG and the Solution look “WOW”. Simple right? The more videos you make the better you’ll get at making content strong and compelling. It doesn’t have to cost cash, but there is a time investment to learning. Keep at it. Just takes 1 winner to make millions.

Complaints, Reviews, Common Sense with Carrie Jeske

I’m amazed at how many people believe complaints, reviews or complements they read online. It’s marketing, you know?

Remember when people used to think what they read in newspapers and magazines and saw on TV shows was real? Then we discovered the whole industry of Public Relations (PR) and realized for $5,000 a month a good PR company can have anyone on Good Morning America, as an expert. I won’t pay that kind of extortion just to look like everyone likes me. The truth is, not everyone does…. but MOST PEOPLE DO.

Coaches promote signed licensing agreements for product that were simply tested but failed; never making the inventor a dime. Inventors should not believe everything written online for the good or the bad. Use your common sense and intuition about people and soberly discern the right next steps for your product.

Most people who write bad reviews are just mad their product failed our test. Please call or write me yourself before you decide your opinion.

It’s the same thing with online reviews now. I recently read a list of very positive reviews for a company every industry insider knows is a scammer. They sounded wonderful. Five Stars. People loved them! There were glowing reviews starting with the initial call by an inventor and what great phone service was provided. Then another reviewer discussed the contracts and how simple to understand they were. I read on to find what fantastic customer service and order fulfillment processes this company had. Then, more about how satisfied and happy with the specific services (written keyword friendly, how convenient.), even sighting employee names, as if they were long lost friends, who’d been reunited.

Seriously? Do people really believe this? It’s a Social Networking Expert, you know. For $5,000 a month (or $5 on Fiverr), you can hire a company to write positive reviews and post them all over the internet. It’s just business. Specifically… it’s todays marketing. Lets go negative.

The Wild Wild West of Online Complaints & Reviews

Anyone can say anything, anytime. Do you think some people might actually be crazy, unbalance, manic? As a semi public figure who’s just posted a few educational videos online for inventors, in a pretty small market segment; I get hassled online all the time. People make all kinds of comments, tweets, reviews based on whatever popped into their head at the moment. True, untrue, fact, fiction, opinion, emotional response, bad hair day…. who knows why? I’ve been threatened by people I’ve never met or worked with in any capacity.

The sad thing is it hurts people and it hurts business. Back in the day, the Better Business Bureau used to be the gold standard of who’s who in the scammer company zoo. Business didn’t like them much because no one wants negative information shared, but at least they required a specific injustice be sited. They required a confirmed real person making a real complaint of a legitimate contractual infraction. Also offer a real opportunity to rebut or make restitution. They provided a true chance for customer satisfaction where parties could agree on how to make a situation right. It was an uncomfortable pain in the butt (as fixing all true
mistakes is), but it worked. Now, they are a relic.

More comments from real people I’ve worked with and helped. Facebook Album of Testimonials.

Be Careful!

We have every manner of Rip Off Report, Pissed Customer, Consumer Advocate, Watch Dog, Social Network where anyone can post anything at anytime. What a great platform for disreputable competitors and the temporarily insane.

These sites will post anything, any time, by anyone. Real, anonymous or made up people with real or made up facts. That seems disreputable to me.

They promote slander under the disguise of public helps. Under the banner of justice. Once names of the accused are locked in, “never to be removed from the public domain”, the real scam begins. Many start an email campaign warning the accused that their company name or personal name may on the verge of “irreparable damage if you don’t act now!” For a small fee, they guarantee to bury or remove all negative information for a price. Hmmm, how convenient for them. The ole’ scammers scam. I hope all the class action law suits against these sites sort out the honest truth.

Are Some Inventors Temporarily Insane?

Lets discuss the “temporarily insane”. That’s something I and most inventors have fallen victim to at one time or another. We love, love, love our own ideas and when we put money into them, the emotional connection borders on worship. (You know it’s true.) When others don’t value it or recognize it’s splendor, that makes no logical sense. Snap. Temporary insanity begins. It happens all the time and now there’s an internet where people can post…. WHAT? Anything, anytime, as anyone. Bottom line…. my grandma used to tell me to have Horse Sense? I’m not sure really how much sense that actually is, but if a company wants money to provide a service for your great new product and has no current product success stories, you might want to reconsider. It may be as simple as that.

Whatever you do you can count on me to tell you the truth, as my experience sees it. I’ll be candid and direct. You won’t always like my advice.

The Truth Hurts!

When you spend money on an invention, it’s a high risk, high return play. Most inventions fail. Most patents don’t produce a financial gain. Never spend more then you can afford to lose and realize sometimes it does take money, to make money. Show some Horse Sense about it. Whether you’re an independent inventor or a big company, the game is the same. Find and/or develop a product mass market consumers buy and get a small piece of the upside.

If you’re a fair minded, reasonable inventor, call or write me anytime. I value long term, honest relationships with real people. I hope we get lucky on a product together. If not, I guess I’ll skim past your posts online (whoever you are) and not let the door hit me in the back.

Onward & Upward,

Click here to learn more about inventing & attracting investors. All you need is a home made demo video of a hand made prototype. Patenting your concept is STEP 4.

Licensing Agreements & Investor Funding

You don’t have to use a professional videographer to secure a licensing agreement. It’s possible to shoot the demo video yourself using a smart phone or video recorder. There are many free video editing apps and software available. As an inventor, it’s important that you become or partner with a video resource that can make demo videos that sell.

Of course, you want to make the best video possible with the least amount of expense. Failing a market viability test makes the product toxic. Who wants to fund a product that’s already failed? That’s like throwing good money after bad.

Also, give us First Look before showing the item around town. Speed to market and confidentiality are important in our business so if everyone is reviewing the product idea at the same time, it loses uniqueness, which is an important characteristic of success.

Target Investors.

For TV products, we need to convince a group of investors that this item is worth funding. It must meet the Characteristics of Successful TV Products and be well made enough to capture their interest. Don’t include any fluff. We review 20-100 products per day/week so we “get it” fast.

What Is It?

Show us you value our time by telling us WHAT the product is right away so we know from the start what we’re reviewing.

What sells is seeing the problem of living without this product and connecting to the emotional pain or struggle that brings. Then, seeing the product in use solving the problem and bringing joy, comfort and ease of use to the situation. Showing and demonstrating use after use increases the value perception of the item showing investors its worth funding and buyers it’s worth owning. Products that solve everyday problems in demonstrable ways are the most successful.

Is There A Problem?

Is it a mass market problem that really needs to be solved? Why? Your ability to visually demonstrate the pain associated in living without your new invention is key. Pain creates the impulse to buy, but it has to be positioned in a positive, helpful way that makes life on planet earth more joyful.

Write out a script or just shoot the video on the fly and post and submit.

In The End.

If you have info about completive items, costs, industry trends or other info that will help us make a decision to fund the product, please put it at the end, unless you built it into the problem.

Make demo videos that sell.

What’s It Named?

Not that big of an issue because we usually change it but if you want to brainstorm, make sure the name reflects the use. Many TV products seem to have two word names starting with the same letter. Consider Magic Mesh, Windshield Wonder, Jupitor Jack.

Then, there are single word names that do well with a super power quality such as Groutinator.

How Long?

Under 2 minutes would be great, but no more than 5 minutes, at most. A good rule of thumb is:

15 seconds to show the product.

Then, 15 seconds to 1 minute to explain the problem.

15 seconds to 1 minute to explain the benefits/value.

Can Inventive Ideas help me sell my product or license my invention?

Yes, with a disclaimer .

If you can’t get traction in licensing or you just want to manufacture and sell the product yourself, we can help.

Disclaimer….

Don’t count on me or anyone to do this for you. The only person who can live your dream, is you. I must warn you, product innovation is not easy.

Don’t spend any more of your money,

unless your fully prepared to spearhead this endeavor to the end and give it significant time and energy.

Worst case scenario is that the product is not accepted by the market,

and it becomes something between a failure and a lesson learned in your life experience.

Never count on anyone else to make your dream happen. When others do add value in some tangible way, just count it a blessing.

There are a million false prophets in this industry but there is a path that leads to success….

The problem is… only you can discover it for yourself.

Here’s how we may be able to help.

1) If you can’t get traction licensing your product, you should consider funding a SMALL production run and selling the units yourself to TEST the market. Don’t invest in too much inventory and save the profits in a separate account for future production. Don’t pay yourself until it’s financially viable and keep your day job. Spend your savings or raise money from friends and family or online crowd sourcing, but DO NOT invest your retirement or other wealth building investments.

Sell my product help…

Inventive Ideas may be able help you:

Get Listed On Websites for Online Retailers –

Get Featured in Catalogs –

We’ll need: Product Photo, Description, Feature/Benefit list, video link. We charge a 10% sales commission on the wholesale value of each unit sold and a $100 set up fee on the first order received.

You’ll need: To set up your own business. PayPal account or e-commerce buttons, to handle shipping each unit to the end user client (Drop Ship), etc.

RECOMMENDED – Consider buying a Member Page on www.i3resouce.org for $500 per product. ICKC is a nonprofit organization that hosts monthly educational meetings and offers an extensive video library. The group has been awarded keyword advertising grants from Google Adwords and Youtube. When featured on the ICKC Member Pages, products are allocated keywords that enhance visibility of the product and offer the inventor a low cost way to promote direct sales testing for the purpose of growing a business or securing a licensing agreement.

How To Sell A New Product By Mastering the Art of Communication

Inventors Center of KC members meeting, June 2012. Special guest Sean Murphy.

How to master the art of good communication skills to sell your product is critical for every product developer, inventor and entrepreneur.

You have to have the ability to explain what your product or service is and why it’s needed.

In Direct Response (DRTV) in the As Seen On TV (asotv) category, learning to communicate and promote your product clearly from the start is important.

see: When As Seen On TV Won’t Fly

Communication style is one of the most important elements to selling a new product. Being able to connect with people on their own terms is a learned skill.

Many inventors and entrepreneurs enjoy the building and tinkering side of business more then the selling and business planning side. That’s fine. Just be sure to get some help. You don’t have to do it all alone. Building a business as part of a team is what Carrie Jeske and Inventive Ideas are all about.
