I love small business!

Small business is thriving in Missouri. I drove to the Missouri University in Columbia. Spoke with the advisors about As Seen on TV products.

And was really impressed. The experts there have so much to offer inventors and entrepreneurs.

The Missouri Small Business & Technology Development Centers (MO SBTDC) help businesses in every stage. From concept to start-up, growth to renewal, mature to succession.

MO SBTDC experts, located statewide.

Providing help on a variety of business topics through:

Professional business analysis

Business consultations and access to technology resources

Educational training seminars on a variety of business topics: financial analysis, strategic planning, technology commercialization, management, HR, social media, marketing, taxes, customer service, business plan, start-up and more.

Earn $330,000 Inventing Products for TV or $27,500 in Finders Fees. Find Out More.

If you have a new product concept that can be licensed or manufactured.

Please contact us. Too many inventors go into early stage small business debt. We recommend low cost, high return inventing.

Be careful to avoid debt in the early stage of small business development. It’s better to start small and make a profit along the way, rather then find yourself in a big hole you dug.

You may need to keep your full time job going.

And work extra hours to get your start-up small business off the ground. That’s part of it. Don’t give up. Just keep increasing sales and keeping expenses low.

Learn and grow in a steady way.

Onward & upward

Inventing for tv and understanding trends.

Learning to spot current trends and make a guess at future behavior is an important part of inventing a good As Seen on TV product.

Recently, I was up late watching PAID PROGRAMMING, enjoying the latest As Seen on TV items available for 19.95 where I stumbled upon

a new show about public opinion. Sure, is politically inspired but it contains public opinion information that leads to buying patterns and

behavior. I was most interested with the idea of scanning the HEADLINES to gain a basic “feel” for the American mindset.

Under their website under “Most Recent Releases” you can scan a list of recent polls taken from the Rasmussen Report Public Opinion Polls.

I think it’s a good idea for anyone inventing for TV or scouting for products to stay current on public opinion.

A few examples found on their Most Recent Releases page

We’re very interested in getting updated on your new products. Can you please send me the info for all new products in a spread sheet format like the attached sample along with images to match SKU? (Also you will notice that on the attached sample there is a second tab that defines what we want in each column on the first tab). Also, could you let me know the best way to download images (WeTransfer, dropbox, etc).

Thank you,

So these are just a few examples of companies looking at new products. Many prefer to work with licensing agents like Inventive Ideas so they can move faster launching products rather then educating inventors.

As a result we can help you get a licensing agreement

-note 1/16/16 – Inventor Notebooks have less value with the passing of America Invents laws.

Here is a link to an up to date Playlist on my YouTube channel.

Protect Ideas

Protect ideas using an Inventor Notebook is the perfect way to start protecting your inventions. In the As Seen on TV distribution channel.

The inventor notebook is the perfect way for creative minds to invent solutions to everyday problems without having to invest a lot of money in patents or product development.

BEFORE

A concept is evaluated for market viability.

According to the USPTO, Inventors have a 12 month grace period to file a provisional patent after the date of the first public disclosure.

When you work with Inventive Ideas, we consider the early stage concept discussions

“confidential and non-public”

So you are not impacted by the grace period.

At the same time,

Protecting your Intellectual Property is a decision best made with the advise of sound legal counsel.

Here are some recommendations about Inventor Notebooks for product ideas.

Standard Recommendations To Protect Ideas:

Use bound notebooks having consecutively numbered pages
Record entries in ink
Enter information directly in notebook (no paper scraps)
No erasing (draw line through mistakes, sign and date corrections)
Do not skip space
Index for retrieval, store securely
Sign, Date, Witness

Great questions from LinkedIn…

Split royalties is it’s going to make you more money. Have of something is better then all of nothing.

Should Inventors Split Royalties?

Hi Carrie,

Thanks for giving my contact information to Rose. She has skills in marketing that I don’t have and need, and has suggested partnering in the endeavor of getting my baby coat to market. She suggested a 50/50 split and I was wondering if this was normal? I feel that I really need someone like her to help me, but also that the invention is mine and I intend to pay for the initial production of the coat. I would appreciate your opinion on such a partnership. Hope all is well with you and your family.

God’s Blessings

Jane

________________________

Jane, I’m glad to hear you’re making progress. Here’s my thoughts.

Team Member Splits –

50/50. There’s nothing wrong with that as long as you are both doing a fair amount of work. Having the help of partners or a management team can be valuable. The 50/50 should be out of the pure profit number, less expenses such as marketing, inventory, etc. If she’s going to incur expenses for marketing she should pay for that from her own money since you’re paying for inventory and keep receipts for future reimbursement.

You keep control of inventory at your location, in case things ever go south, you don’t want to have to track down product. That means you’ll have to do the shipping, which is a pain when volumes get higher. However, the hope is that volumes do get high and that you either end up licensing the patent and just collecting royalties, or you continue to build the business with her, taking all revenue in and paying all expenses out of.

Whatever you do, keep track of every dime you spend on your own money. You should account for money going in as a loan from shareholder (you). Hopefully one day the company will pay you back, plus interest. You can keep track of any money she spends as simple expense. You are the owner and 100% equity shareholder of your company and patent, regardless of how you end up negotiating compensation for team members, partners, etc.

Standard Sales %

Straight commissioned only sales people normally make 10% of wholesale value. Distributors usually want 30% gross margin. Online retailer and brick and mortar retailers usually want 50% gross margin. All these are on the Expense side of your accounting records, in one category or another.

Timeframes & Sales Goals

Also, there should be a goal set for sales with a timeframe attached. If the min sales are not made by x date then the agreement is void.

Intellectual Property

Finally, do not agree to any ownership of the patent. You are the patent owner always. You simply license the use of the patent to others for an agreed upon royalty. In this case, it’s more of a management partnership for marketing purposes, but the patent should always remain yours. What most people do is form a third company and have the inventor license the patent rights to that company. The agreement for profit split is between her and the company you set up, less expenses. There are other ways to do it and I’m not a fan of a lot of legal fees or corporate complications at the early stage. You do want to be certain you’re comfortable with worst case scenarios though, by reducing the risk of them.

Having help is a good thing, if you have an intuition of integrity and get everything agreed to in writing without a lot of legal headache. The agreement should be simple and easy to understand by you both.
